Masseter Botox in Ankara

Masseter Botox involves injecting botulinum toxin into the masseter muscles, which are among the main muscles used for chewing. In suitable patients, the procedure may be considered to temporarily reduce excessive muscle activity, relieve certain symptoms associated with clenching or grinding the teeth, or soften a wide, angular jawline caused by enlarged muscles.

Not every wide jawline is caused by the masseter muscles. The shape of the jawbone, distribution of facial fat, skin laxity and overall facial proportions also affect the appearance of the lower face. Similarly, teeth clenching and jaw pain do not always originate solely from the masseter muscles.

Before treatment, muscle structure, facial anatomy, temporomandibular joint findings, clenching or grinding habits and individual expectations should therefore be assessed together.

What Is the Masseter Muscle?

The masseter is a strong muscle located on each side of the lower jaw and plays an important role in chewing. It can be felt above the angle of the jaw when the teeth are clenched.

In some people, the masseter muscles are naturally thicker or stronger. Repeated clenching, teeth grinding or intensive chewing habits may also make them more prominent over time.

An enlarged masseter can make the lower face appear wider or more angular. During the examination, however, it is important to determine whether this width comes primarily from muscle, bone or other soft tissues.

Why Is Masseter Botox Used?

For suitable patients, masseter Botox may be considered for two main purposes:

  • Helping to reduce excessive activity of the masseter muscles

  • Gradually softening lower-face width caused by increased muscle volume

Botulinum toxin may be used as a supportive treatment for some people experiencing muscle fatigue or pain related to clenching or grinding their teeth. However, it does not repair worn teeth, correct structural problems affecting the jaw joint or address every underlying cause of bruxism.

Jaw pain, temporomandibular joint disorders and sleep-related bruxism may require assessment by a dentist, oral and maxillofacial surgeon, physiotherapist or another relevant specialist.

Are Teeth Clenching and Bruxism the Same?

Bruxism refers to repetitive jaw-muscle activity that may occur while awake or during sleep. It can involve clenching or grinding the teeth or repeatedly tensing the lower jaw.

Awake and sleep bruxism may develop through different mechanisms. Stress and habitual muscle tension may contribute to daytime clenching, while sleep bruxism may be associated with sleep patterns, certain medications and other medical factors.

Possible symptoms include:

  • Tired or tense jaw muscles on waking

  • Jaw or facial pain

  • Tooth wear or sensitivity

  • Prominent jaw muscles

  • Headaches or pain around the temples

  • Clicking, tenderness or discomfort in the jaw joint

  • Difficulty opening the mouth

These symptoms are not specific to bruxism and may have other causes. A dental assessment is particularly important when there is jaw-joint pain, locking, restricted mouth opening or significant tooth damage.

Does Masseter Botox Completely Stop Teeth Clenching?

Botulinum toxin can temporarily reduce the strength of masseter muscle contractions. As a result, some patients may experience less clenching force, muscle fatigue or pain.

However, the procedure does not remove all the neurological, behavioural, psychological or dental factors that may contribute to teeth clenching. The intensity of muscle contraction may decrease even if grinding during sleep does not stop completely.

Masseter Botox should therefore not be presented as a permanent or definitive cure for bruxism. For suitable patients, it may form part of a broader treatment plan that includes a night guard, dental treatment, awareness of daytime clenching habits, sleep assessment or other appropriate therapies.

Masseter Botox for Jawline Slimming

When enlarged masseter muscles are the main reason for a wide lower face, reducing muscle activity may gradually decrease muscle volume and create a softer, narrower-looking jawline.

The aesthetic change is not immediate. Muscle activity decreases first, while the reduction in muscle volume develops more gradually.

The outcome may be influenced by:

  • The initial size of the masseter muscles

  • The shape of the lower jawbone

  • The distribution of facial fat

  • Skin elasticity and laxity

  • The dose and injection points used

  • The individual response to botulinum toxin

If the width of the jaw is mainly related to bone structure or other soft tissues, masseter Botox may not produce the desired slimming effect. Reducing muscle volume may also alter the appearance of the lower face in an unexpected way, particularly in people with existing skin laxity. Facial shape and skin support should therefore be assessed together before treatment.

How Is Masseter Botox Administered?

Before treatment, the face is assessed both at rest and while the patient clenches their teeth. The strength, size and borders of the masseter muscles are examined, along with any differences between the two sides.

After the skin has been cleansed, botulinum toxin is injected into selected points within the masseter muscles. The dose and number of injection points depend on muscle strength, facial anatomy, the aim of treatment and the particular product used.

The units used for different botulinum toxin products are not directly interchangeable, and their approved indications may also vary. Before treatment, the patient should be informed about the product being used, the purpose of the procedure, its limitations and its potential risks.

When Does Masseter Botox Start to Work?

Muscle activity usually begins to decrease within the first few days after treatment, with the effect becoming more noticeable over the following weeks.

Changes in muscle fatigue or discomfort associated with clenching may be noticed before any visible change in facial shape. Jawline slimming caused by a gradual reduction in muscle volume develops more slowly and may take several weeks or longer to assess fully.

Botulinum toxin is not permanent. Its effect gradually wears off, and muscle activity returns over time. Repeat treatments should be planned according to the individual’s clinical response and needs rather than following a fixed schedule.

What Are the Possible Side Effects?

Masseter Botox is a medical procedure and is not entirely without risk. Possible side effects include:

  • Pain or tenderness at the injection site

  • Redness, swelling or bruising

  • Temporary fatigue when chewing

  • A feeling of weakness when chewing firm foods

  • Asymmetry between the two sides of the face

  • Temporary changes in the smile or lower facial expressions

  • A weaker or stronger effect than expected

  • Unwanted changes in facial contour

  • Unintended effects on nearby muscles

  • Rarely, difficulty speaking or swallowing

Very rarely, the effects of botulinum toxin may spread beyond the treated area. Symptoms such as generalised muscle weakness, double vision, or difficulty speaking, swallowing or breathing require urgent medical attention.

The likelihood and severity of side effects may vary depending on the product, dose, injection sites, individual anatomy and any underlying health conditions.

Who May Not Be Suitable for Masseter Botox?

The doctor should be informed of any of the following before treatment:

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding

  • An active infection in the treatment area

  • A known allergy to botulinum toxin or any ingredient in the product

  • A neuromuscular disorder

  • Existing difficulty with chewing or swallowing

  • Use of certain antibiotics or other medicines that may affect muscle function

  • Medicines that may increase bleeding or bruising

  • A previous adverse reaction to botulinum toxin

  • Recent dental treatment or a procedure involving the jaw

Prescribed medication should not be stopped without medical advice. Suitability for the procedure and any necessary precautions should be determined through an individual medical assessment.

What Should You Do After Masseter Botox?

After treatment, avoid pressing firmly on or massaging the injected areas, and follow the specific aftercare instructions provided by your doctor.

Temporary tenderness or an unfamiliar sensation when chewing may occur. Contact the doctor who performed the treatment if you develop significant jaw pain, increasing swelling, a noticeable change in your smile or difficulty chewing.

The result should not be judged during the first few days. Enough time should be allowed for changes in muscle activity and volume to develop. If appropriate, muscle strength, facial symmetry and the response to treatment may be reassessed at a follow-up appointment.

The practice is located near Turan Güneş Boulevard in Çankaya, Ankara. Appointments are available for the assessment of prominent masseter muscles and symptoms associated with clenching or grinding the teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions

The masseter is a muscle on each side of the jaw that helps with chewing. Botulinum toxin injections into this muscle temporarily reduce the strength of its contractions. In suitable patients, treatment may be considered to reduce the prominence of the muscle or relieve certain muscle symptoms associated with teeth clenching. Injection sites and dosage are determined by the muscle’s structure and the treatment goal.

If enlarged masseter muscles account for much of the width of the lower face, a gradual reduction in muscle volume may create a slimmer appearance. However, the treatment does not reduce the size of the jawbone or dissolve fat. Results may be limited when facial width is related to bone structure, fat tissue, or sagging. The cause of the width should therefore be assessed before treatment.

In some patients, reducing the strength of the chewing muscles may relieve muscle pain associated with teeth clenching. However, treatment does not address the underlying cause of clenching, and results vary from person to person. Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders are distinct from teeth clenching, and evidence for the effectiveness of botulinum toxin in these conditions is inconsistent. A dental assessment, a night guard when needed, and other appropriate approaches remain part of the treatment plan.

Reduced muscle activity generally begins within the first few days and becomes more noticeable after about two weeks. Changes in facial shape develop over the following weeks as muscle volume decreases. The effect is temporary and may last several months, although changes in appearance may last for a different length of time than the reduction in muscle strength. The need for repeat treatment depends on whether symptoms return and the findings of a follow-up assessment.

Temporary chewing weakness or fatigue, particularly when chewing hard foods, may occur after treatment. If nearby muscles are affected, changes in the smile or asymmetry may develop. Pain, bruising, and swelling at the injection sites are also possible. Very rarely, serious symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, speaking, or breathing may occur and require immediate medical attention. Careful anatomical assessment and dose selection based on each patient’s needs are important.

Tell your physician about any medications you take, neuromuscular conditions, previous botulinum toxin treatments, and any difficulties with chewing or swallowing. Cosmetic treatment is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Treatment is postponed if there is an active infection at the injection site. After treatment, avoid rubbing or massaging the treated area and follow your physician’s aftercare instructions. Do not stop using a night guard or discontinue other treatments for teeth clenching without consulting the dentist or physician managing your care.
